After a rapid rise in the church hierarchy, he was appointed archbishop of Paris by Pope John Paul II and found a new platform to vindicate his dual identity as a Catholic Jew, which led him both friends and enemies on both sides. When in the 80 Carmelite nuns established a convent within the walls of Auschwitz, sparking a conflict between the two communities, Lustiger is discovered as a mediator between Jews and Catholics and forced into a position in favor of one or the other.
