It was a huge box office success in its premiere on February 20, 1934, and it was based on the memoirs of war Zöberlein director himself, " Der Glaube an Deutschland ". Facing the pacifist " All Quiet on the front" and " Westfront 1918 ", this piece of cinema gives more favorable terms to Germany. It was funded by the National Socialist government, and had the Wehrmacht and SA troops as extras. It is thoroughly realistic and many of its effects are not such, but even were performed with live ammunition and explosives. It was banned in Germany after the end of World War II.
