A soothsayer revealed that Artemis, the goddess of hunting, was furious because the Greeks had killed one of the animals she protected. The only way to appease the goddess and get favorable winds to sail was to sacrifice Iphigenia, daughter of Agamemnon, who was lost in a tragic moral conflict.
