Theo, Norbert, Sabinchen, as well as Fabio, the only real orphan, are sent to Schneckenbach in Württemberg and received by the nurse Birgit. They are placed by Birgit in private families after some difficulties. Sabinchen comes to the merchant Friedrich Wilhelm Wurst, Theo to the chimney sweep Alois Knopf, Norbert comes to the Sommerrocks and Mrs. Schäufele takes in Fabio. All families have good reasons and their own selfish goals for taking in the children. But in the end, many things turn out quite differently than the Schneckenbachers thought, as a dramatic rescue operation throws everything into turmoil.
