After losing his place in the orchestra, he has no choice but to play at funerals to survive. But has contracted many debts and can not pay it off. So when Mr. Broz, the undertaker, suggests to solve their financial problems by marrying a Russian teenager who wants to get Czech citizenship, accepts. She takes advantage of this situation to emigrate to West Germany her lover, leaving her five years with his grandmother. But when the grandmother dies, Kolya must live with his stepfather.
