Um für sie sorgen zu können, hat er nicht wieder geheiratet. Irma, eine stille, kluge junge Frau, studiert Medizin. Zur Finanzierung dieser Ausbildung vermietet Bänz ein Zimmer an Toni Schellenberg , einen jungen Burschen vom Land mit viel versprechender Zukunft als Fussballer. Die Grossstadt aber, das leicht verdiente Geld und oberflächliche Freunde lassen Toni Training und Abendkurse vernachlässigen, und schliesslich stellt ihn sein Arbeitgeber vor die Tür. Irma, die sich in den feschen Sportler verliebt hat, bittet den Vater um Hilfe. Der kann Toni schliesslich eine Anstellung als Taxifahrer verschaffen. Als aber Irma ein Studentenfest besucht und sich zudem auf ein Rendezvous mit dem Oberarzt Dr. Zbinden einlässt, fühlt sich Toni zurückgesetzt.
