One day, walking along the cliffs, a teenager dressed in black Charles arouses curiosity. Ernestina tells Sarah that it is Woodrof, known as "The French Lieutenant's Woman " because years ago he had an affair with a French officer who then abandoned. Charles befriends Sarah and, seeing her so helpless, decides to take measures to guarantee a decent future and away from the gossip.
