James Brodie has a hat shop, is ruthless, arrogant, selfish, cruel, and supports his family in fear and submission. His wife, who long ago that is sick, and his daughter Nancy are intimidated by him. His son Angus 15 years, the only one he wants, suffers his love as much as others suffer its severity. Brodie spends his evenings with Nancy, the maid of Winton Arms Tavern.
